Howard Alden Trio Returns to Falmouth

The Howard Alden Trio will present an evening of swing in Woods Hole Community Hall in scenic Falmouth on Cape Cod Tuesday. June 14th, at 7:30 PM. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door.

This performance is a reunion of sorts. All three performers, are founding members of the Alden Barrett Quintet, one of the most well-known and influential small group swing ensembles.

Guitarist Howard Alden was a central figure in the small group swing revival of the 70s and 80s. Mr. Alden has performed and recorded with legendary jazz artists Ruby Braff, Joe Williams, Benny Carter, and Dizzy Gillespie among others. He was voted “Best Emerging Talent – Guitar” in the first Jazz Times Critics Poll, and Downbeat recognized Alden as one of the “Top 75 Guitarists” in 2008. He appeared in Falmouth last spring....

After playing with Buddy Rich’s big band in the late 70s, jazz saxophonist and clarinetist Chuck Wilson entered the studio in NYC for a decade. Subsequently, he performed with Tito Punete, Gerry Mulligan, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, and Benny Goodsman’s last ensemble. This is Mr. Wilson’s first performance in Falmouth.

Bassist Frank Tate was the leader of the house band at the famous jazz club, Blues Alley in Washington D.C. before moving to New York to join pianist Marian McPartland, who later hosted NPR’s Piano Jazz. In his four decade career, Mr. Tate has performed with well-known jazz artists Benny Goodman, Zoot Sims, Teddy Wilson, Joe Venuti, Pearl Baily, and the Ruby Braf Trio. He performed as part of the house band with Dave McKenna at the famous Columns Club in Dennis on Cape Cod, where jazz stars such as Tony Bennet, Lionel Hampton, Dick Johnson, and Zoot Sims played outside under the tent in the summer.
