California native Howard Alden began playing guitar and banjo at age 10 listening to guitar greats Barney Kessell, Charlie Christian, and Django Reinhardt. He taught himself six-string guitar and began playing in clubs around Los Angles before heading east to play with the legendary Red Novo. He became widely known in New York as a top notch soloist and accompanist and a major player in the small group swing movement, appearing and recording with artists such as Joe Bushkin, Ruby Braff, Joe Williams, Warren Vache` Woody Herman, Benny Carter, Mel Powell, Bud Freeman, Clark Terry, and Dizzy Gillespie. It was a recording with seven string guitar innovator and master George Van Eps that lead Howard to adopt the seven string guitar, imparting a greater range and harmonic richness to his already colorful tonal palette. Howard can be heard on the soundtrack of the Woody Allen film, Sweet and Lowdown, starring Sean Penn., who plays a fictional Django-style jazz guitarist. Howard played the guitar solos but also taught Penn how to appear to be playing the guitar. A prolific recording artist, Alden has over 20 CDs to his credit including his 2010 Arbor Records release I remember Django with John Burr, Warren Vache and Anat Cohen.
