Both Israeli-born clarinetist and saxophonist Anat Cohen and California native guitarist Howard Alden share a love of Brazilian music and Django Reinhardt. Alden’s 2010 Arbor Records release, I remember Django features Cohen. The duo will play swing, Dixieland, Latin, hot jazz and Choro, often described as the New Orleans jazz and ragtime of Brazil.

The Jazz Journalists Association has voted Cohen as Clarinetist of the Year eight years in a row, and she has topped both the Critics and Readers Polls in the clarinet category in DownBeat magazine every year since 2011. All About Jazz’s Dan Bilawsky says, “She’s one of a kind.” Will Friedwald of the Wall Street Journal writes, “What’s not to like about a young clarinetist and saxophonist who plays everything we love – modern jazz, world music, “hot” New Orleans style jazz – and does it all brilliantly.” Cohen has seven albums as a bandleader to her credit, and many more on which she has appeared, including four with the acclaimed 3 Cohens sextet, featuring her brothers Yuval on saxophone, and Avishai on trumpet.

Alden taught himself to play six-string guitar performing in clubs around Los Angeles before heading east in 1979 to perform with the legendary vibraphonist Red Novo. He became a major player in the small group swing movement of the 1980s, performing and recording with artists like Ruby Braff, Joe Williams, Benny Carter, and Dizzy Gillespie. He was voted “Best Emerging Talent – Guitar” in the first Jazz Times Critics Poll, and Downbeat recognized Alden as one of the “Top 75 Guitarists” in 2008. He has continued to win accolades from critics and musicians alike performing and recording with contemporaries such as Scott Hamilton, Ken Peplowski and Bucky Pizzarelli. Alden has over 20 albums to his credit. As an interesting aside, Alden coached actor Sean Penn to mime guitar playing for Penn’s role as a Django-style jazz guitarist in the Woody Allen film Sweet and Lowdown.
